Poetry Comparison.

In my poetry comparison I chose to compare the following two poems, 'Annabel Lee' by Edgar Allan Poe and 'The Abnormal is Not Courage' by Jack Gilbert. In Annabel Lee the author laments over the loss of his one true love. He describes how his love for Annabel Lee never goes away even after her death. What he feels for her is truly lasting and sincere. And in 'The Abnormal is not Courage' Gilbert describes how courage is the kind of thing you do after a long time without ceasing for example, in love you love without ceasing and that in itself is courage. He uses the example of Penelope in 'The Odyssey' how her love for her husband was courageous enough to stand the test of time. The similarity between the two is that love that the authors are describing both are about as courageous as the other. Each poem tells about how courage is having the strength to stand forever.

'Hamlet' William Shakespeare

In William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet we encounter the themes of incest, treachery, moral corruption and revenge. The name serves this story well because it all ends in tragedy. In the play Hamlet seeks out to avenge his father's murder. The killer being his uncle Claudius who killed his father and married his mother, Gertrude. In turn, Hamlet realizes this and gets very angry and seeks revenge for his father. In the end the biggest tragedy is that not only does Hamlet avenge his father's death by poisining Claudius but he also accidently poisons his mother and kills her along with Claudius and even Hamlet himself gets poisoned and dies. I believe revenge is never a good thing to go after because no matter what it will always have a negative outcome in one way or another.

Sonnet 116; Let me not to the marriage of true minds

Let me not to the marriage of true minds is a poem in which Shakespeare describes love. He starts out by explaining that love does not alter when alteration finds. Meaning it does not change under any circumstance it is unconditional and it is like a fixed mark that cannot be removed. He goes on to say that when love encounters a hardship it bears the hardship and comes out alive, it will survive it. It does not last a few hours or weeks and does not let time change it. It is interesting that Shakespeare would describe love as something everlasting.

Ode on a Grecian Urn by John Keats

In Ode on a Grecian Urn, Keats says " Beauty is truth, truth beauty. That is ye know on earth and all ye need to know." It is something that I agree with because when a person knows the truth about their life for example, that someone loves you than everything else is bearable. Life can be difficult and lies only make it even more difficult to live ao if we would all just be honest and speak trtuth to each other than the earth would be a place in which we are not being decieved. It is not a beautiful thing to be decieved but it is a beautiful thing to be told the truth. If you know someone genuinely loves you then all the hardships you may go through in life are bearable and that in itself truly is beauty.

The Emperor of Ice Cream by Wallace Stevens

This is one of the poems we read in my english class, it was really odd and interesting. I really enjoyed it, because it is a peom that is open to interpretation. It talks about boy bringing flowers in last month's newspaper whick I believe could probably simbolize boys bringing good news or telling good stories about the past. It also describes how the only emperor is the emperor of ice cream which could simbolize something that determines something els. For example, the only thing that ends life is death. Or the only thing that ends hate is love. It's interesting how one can interpret this poem in different ways.

One of my favorite movies

One of my favorite movies is without a doubt Forrest Gump. I truly enjoy this entire film every time I watch it. It can make you laugh and it can make you cry. It takes you through all of your emotions. It spans the life of Forrest Gump, everything he accomplished in life and how he loved one woman always even after she passes away. Forrest is an interesting character, he is simple and generous and productive in the film. It was interesting how even though Jenny the woman he loved was usually far away, he would never stop thinking about her and always loved her. A love like the one he had for her seems delicate and lasting.

Shakespeare's Sonnet 130; My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun.

William Shakespeare's Sonnet 130 titled My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun is a poem that strikes me and really stands out to me. It is truly a classic and such an interesting poem to read, one of my favorites. Simply because the way Shakespeare describes his mistress is in such a genuine and sincere way. The poem is direct and honest. More often than not when we encounter a poem about a person's sweetheart we find that the author is saying how that person is perfect and beautiful in so many ways and though these poems are very nice to read, they in some ways embellish and misrepresent the way that person truly is. That is why this particular Sonnet by Shakespeare is so great. It is great how he acknowledges that his mistress does not literally have roses on her cheeks, her eyes are not like the sun and though he loves to hear her speak music has a far more pleasing sound. Yet in all the imperfection he sees her as rare and wonderful in her own comparison and not in false comparison.
